Rep. Jenkins' Health Savings Account Bill Passes Committee

Washington, D.C. – Today, Representative Lynn Jenkins’ (R-K) bill H.R. 6199 passed the House Ways and Means Committee with strong bipartisan support.

Introduced with Representatives Ron Kind (D-WI), Eric Paulsen (R-MN), and Grace Meng (D-NY), the legislation gives Americans the ability to choose how they spend their Flexible Spending Arrangements (FSAs), Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), and other similar tax preferred health accounts by restoring access to over-the-counter medications. Current law under the Affordable Care Act requires consumers to obtain a doctor’s prescription for over-the-counter medications in order to be eligible for reimbursement under their consumer health savings accounts.

“Over-the-counter medications are often the frontline treatment for many common illnesses or for maintenance of chronic disease. Over-the-counter medications should be treated as medically reimbursable healthcare therapies, just as prescription drugs are.” said Congresswoman Jenkins. “I look forward to seeing H.R. 6199 brought to the House floor for a vote and moving one step closer to restoring Americans’ access to medication.”
