Lynn's Weekly Update - Delivering Weekly Republican Address, Launching New Website, Swine Influenza

Delivering Weekly Republican Radio Address
This week marked the 100th day of President Obama’s term, and though I admit he inherited a mess when he took office, I am very concerned with the direction he and the Democrat party in Congress are taking our nation. As a mother of two teenagers, a CPA, and the former state treasurer of Kansas, I am very troubled with the massive debt burden being placed on future generations.

These times are challenging and this recession has caused Kansas families to tighten their belts and make sacrifices each day. Rather than following suit, the federal government, over the past 100 days, spent your hard-earned tax dollars without restraint. From the nearly $1 trillion so-called “stimulus” bill, to the $410 billion omnibus appropriations bill, the release of the second $350 billion in TARP bailout funds and now the $3.55 trillion federal budget plan, it is clear that Washington needs to change its ways and reign in wasteful spending habits. When you elected me to represent you in Washington, I promised to work on common-sense solutions to turn our economy around, and I remain committed to that promise.

I will be delivering the weekly Republican radio address tomorrow morning, and I will talk about many of these issues. My address will follow President Obama’s weekly radio address, and I hope you will tune in tomorrow morning. I will also have audio and video of my address on my website tomorrow.

Launching New Website
Constituent services continues to be one of my main priorities, and I was pleased this week to launch my new congressional website. The address of my new site remains the same, www.lynnjenkins.house.gov. In addition to my policy positions, there are links to legislation that I have sponsored and to the Financial Services Committee. The new website includes video clips from speeches on the House floor, audio clips, photographs from my travels in Kansas and links to networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter. My website also contains helpful information about federal agencies, congressional internships and will help folks plan trips to Washington, D.C. It is important for me to know how you feel about the issues of the day and my new website will help me listen to the folks in Kansas. Please continue to use my website as a way to contact me and to navigate the federal bureaucracy.

Swine Influenza

I understand many of you are concerned about the outbreak of H1N1 Swine Influenza. While there have only been two confirmed cases in Kansas, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment is working closely with the Centers for Disease Control to take all necessary precautions to prevent additional cases in the state.

Remember, the two most important things folks can do is to stay informed and remain calm.  I recommend going to http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/ and http://www.kdheks.gov/H1N1/index.htm  to learn more about swine influenza, the government’s response, and simple ways you can stay healthy.

This Weekend in Kansas

Today I will be in Lawrence attending a luncheon with the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce. After the luncheon, I will participate in an energy rally at the State Capitol in Topeka, encouraging the Kansas Legislature to pass energy legislation that will create jobs, produce clean energy and grow the Kansas economy. Tomorrow morning I will be delivering the weekly Republican radio address, and Sunday at 3:00 p.m. I will host a reception at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library to announce the winner of the 2009 Congressional Art Competition in the Second District.
